Prokaryote Genome Size Database

This page provides prokaryote (Bacteria and Archaea) genome sizes in kilobases (kb) assessed by pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and complete genome sequencing.

Data for genome sizes determined by PFGE are available as Table 1.
These PFGE data were compiled as part of the study by Islas et al. (2004) published in Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere 34: 243-256, and this online database was generated by T. Ryan Gregory, University of Guelph, Canada, in collaboration with Antonio Lazcano and Sara Islas, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de MexicoFor additional discussion of these data, see Gregory and DeSalle (2005) in The Evolution of the Genome.

For genome size data determined by complete genome sequencing, please consult the following databases, which are updated regularly:

TIGR Comprehensive Microbial Resource (CMR)

Genomes On Line Database (GOLD)

Center for Biological Sequence Analysis (CBS) Genome Atlas Database

Please note that this database is still under construction, and will eventually
include genome size data acquired by complete genome sequencing.
